The Ormuri language and the historical settlement of Kaniguram

High on a spur in South Waziristan sits Kaniguram, a settlement known for both metalcraft and linguistics. Here lives the Ormur (Burki) community, speaking Ormuri — an isolated Western Iranian language surrounded on all sides by Eastern Iranian Pashto.

Colonial gazetteers noted the language early, but Georg Morgenstierne’s 1929 field investigations provided the first comprehensive phonetic and grammatical description, establishing its archaic features.

Oral tradition connects the Ormur to ancient migration routes from Logar and Nishapur. Preserving documentation on Ormuri and the artisans of Kaniguram is among the cultural preservation priorities of POHAN.
